![]() Series one centres on a Jack the Ripper copycat, while series two focuses on the infamous Kray twins. Whitechapel puts a unique spin on the detective genre, weaving historical crimes into the story as a team of London detectives investigate modern killers replicating notable murders from the past. ![]() With Marcella returning to ITV for a second season, this is a great time to catch up on the first eight episodes of the British crime noir series.Īnna Friel stars as former London detective Marcella Backland who returns to the murder squad when an old, unsolved serial killer case becomes active again.Ĭreated by Hans Rosenfeldt, the man behind Scandinavian crime series The Bridge, Marcella is a clever, complex and suspense-filled drama. The actor is at the top of his game in the British crime drama, which premiered in 2010 and started filming its fifth season in early 2018.Įlba’s performance is the main draw but it’s his character’s relationship with whip-smart psychopath Alice Morgan (Ruth Wilson) that propels the show forward. It’s no surprise that Idris Elba won both a Golden Globe and a Critics’ Choice award for his role as the titular DCI John Luther. ![]() Once you start watching this intense detective show, you won’t stop until you’ve devoured every gripping episode. It also throws you right into the show without a lot of extra exposition, but I loved that part of it because on a rewatch I catch little things I missed the first time through.Starring Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian Dunbar, it follows the AC-12 anti-corruption unit as they investigate crooked officers within the force. Season 3 was really good too, although it felt a bit more unrealistic.īut yeah I can't recommend Gomorrah enough it is one of the best shows I've ever seen, although it is very violent and most characters don't seem very redeemable at first. ![]() I've been rewatching it in anticipation of HBO adding season 4, and the first 2 seasons are soooo damn good, it feels more realistic at times than even something like the Wire, although you pretty much only get the perspective of the criminals, not really any police. Make sure to watch with subtitles, the dub isn't very good. It's shot very gorgeously and realistically and has characters killed off at alarming rates and an ever evolving story of gangs, families, betrayal, and the gritty lifestyle of being in the Camorra 'system' in Naples. I don't think it's on netflix anymore because it's on hbo max now, but the Italian series Gomorrah is one of the best drama series I've ever seen. Also ‘Bad Times at the El Royale’.įor character development why not go crazy and try downton abbey.Īs for strictly on Netflix: The Stranger was at the very least a fun watch with a mystery, the documentary ‘The Pharmacist” is a great character study that satisfied all my watching needs, same with “the mind of Aaron Hernandez” and “don’t f*ck with cats”. If you haven’t seen already also I think The Game with Michael Douglas is on a streaming site right now and that’s in my top five movies of all time (my fave genres are what you seem to be looking for). It’s hbo, but I’d you are one who can watch things there with or without subscribing it’s damn well worth it- so is the outsider, also hbo, and the undoing. Imo it’s more a character study, a very beautiful one, with a crime that is hard to whimsically “enjoy the ride” as you watch.
